Rooney effort let to lead United's win

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s second-half equaliser earned holders Barcelona a 1-1 draw at VfB Stuttgart in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday.
Two Wayne Rooney headers led Manchester United to a 3-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, taking the champions within a point of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League. Striker Rooney, who also scored two headers when his side beat AC Milan in the Champions League last week, took his tally for the season to 27 — with 19 of those goals coming in his last 19 matches. Substitute Michael Owen added the third in the 80th minute, two minutes after replacing goal machine Rooney who executed both headers with real power from crosses by Antonio Valencia after 38 and 55 minutes. Manchester United are second with 60 points from 28 matches, one behind leaders Chelsea who have a game in hand. United gradually took control of the game and deservedly went ahead seven minutes before halftime with a brilliantly-executed goal, Valencia providing a cushioned volley cross for Rooney to score. Nine minutes later Rooney doubled the lead with another fine header and Owen made sure of victory when he opened his body and found the far corner of the net after a through pass from Paul Scholes

Double hundred of Sachien

Sachien tendulkar the Indian batsman hold the record of Double century in the match against South Africa in wednesday in Gwalior.milestone man Sachin Tendulkar re-wrote the record books on Wednesday, hammering the first double century in the history of one-day cricket to add another feather to his well-adorned cap.At 36, Tendulkar hasn't shown signs of ageing, and his sparkling touch in both forms of the game has ruled out all possibilities of him checking out anytime soon. Fatigue, cramps and paucity of time have stood in the way of batsmen going that extra mile to get to the 200-mark. Tendulkar did cramp up after crossing 150, but he didn't opt for a runner. His experience of 20 years at the international level came into play in this historic innings, staying at the crease from the first ball to the last, never once losing focus. There were no chances offered, no dropped catches, making his innings absolutely flawless.

Ferguson has no Beckham regret

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has "no regrets" over the sale of David Beckham as he prepares to face his former star.

Beckham was near the height of his powers when he was sold by United to Real Madrid in 2003 but Ferguson feels the matter has long since been consigned to history.

The pair will be reunited this month when the Red Devils take on the midfielder's current club, AC Milan, in the Champions League.

Ferguson is now more concerned about how his players will handle the inevitable attention that will accompany Beckham during the last-16 tie than wondering about what might have been.

When asked about the player's £25million move from Old Trafford, Ferguson told the club's official magazine 'Inside United': "No regrets. We move on."

He added: "The only difference with David's return to Manchester United compared with other players is that there will be a big media circus surrounding him when Milan arrive.

"He's such a high-profile celebrity - not just a high-profile footballer - and we haven't really seen anybody else return to the club in that situation.

"Our job is to concentrate on the football match and let the David Beckham media circus carry on - we know we're not going to stop it anyway."

Cricket news-England begin coach hunt

The England and Wales Cricket Board are seeking a successor for Ottis Gibson after the fast bowling coach left his post on Tuesday.

Barbados-born Gibson vacated the role he has occupied since 2007 to take up the position of West Indies head coach.

"Ottis has been a valuable member of my management team and we will all be sorry to see him leave," said England head coach Andy Flower.

"However we recognise that being offered the chance to be head coach of your country was an offer that would be hard for Ottis to resist. We wish him well in the future."

Gibson played two Tests and 15 one-day internationals for the West Indies but was brought to England's attention by his county cricket displays for Durha

Blues would offer Terry break

The centre-back was Chelsea's captain for the second match since allegations of his private life hit the newspapers as he led the Blues out in their 1-1 draw at Hull City on Tuesday night.

Headlines have provided saturation coverage of Terry's alleged affair with the ex-girlfriend of England team-mate Wayne Bridge and it has been rumoured that further revelations are imminent.

It has therefore been questioned whether the defender should remain as England skipper and a meeting with Fabio Capello regarding the subject is predicted to take place on Thursday evening or Friday morning.

There has been speculation that Terry will then be allowed by Ancelotti to miss the FA Cup clash with Cardiff on 13th February to address matters in his private life, which would include spending Valentine's Day with his wife.

Hull City 1 - 1 Chelsea

Didier Drogba celebrated his return from African Nations Cup duty by notching his 20th goal of the season to spare Chelsea's blushes in a 1-1 draw against lowly Hull.

racing news-F1 set to formalize points system, tire changes

FIA is also proposing to have the top-10 race qualifiers start on their qualifying tires, while the rest of the field could use new tires. F1 will also reduce the number of dry-weather tires available to teams to "encourage teams to run during the Friday practice sessions."

"We're not 100 percent sure on this yet," Tost said of having to race on the tires used in qualifying, although he did believe this would make races more interesting.

Measures to exclude the contentious double diffuser -- a rear wing design that creates more downforce -- from 2011 were also agreed on.

Teams protested against Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams last year over their interpretation of the diffuser rule after the design helped eventual constructors' champion Brawn pull away from the pack. However, the double diffuser was later cleared for use.

The proposals will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for approval within 48 hours, FIA said.

McCarron: I didn't call Lefty 'cheater'

In a statement released Monday, McCarron discussed his original comments to the San Francisco Chronicle regarding Mickelson and other players using Ping-Eye 2 clubs that have grooves which no longer conform to USGA and PGA Tour standards, but are still considered legal because they were grandfathered in two decades ago.

I responded, 'It's cheating and I am appalled Phil has put it in play' ... I never called Phil Mickelson a cheater. That being said, I want my fans, sponsors, and most importantly, my fellow players, to know that I will not be silenced and I will continue my efforts to get the groove issue resolved.

-- Scott McCarron

Interviewed by CBS during its telecast of the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open on Saturday, Mickelson maintained that he had been "publicly slandered" by McCarron. He later addressed the situation further, saying, "Again, everybody has their opinions and so forth, and it's healthy to talk about it. But when you cross that line and slander someone publicly, that's when the tour needs to step in -- or someone else."

For its part, the PGA Tour has stepped in, issuing a statement that read, in part, "Because the use of pre-1990 Ping-Eye 2 irons is permitted for play, public comments or criticisms characterizing their use as a violation of the rules of golf as promulgated by the USGA are inappropriate at best."
